Charlie Brooker on how to prevent more riots & standing up for social media...

In the smouldering aftermath, some politicians, keen to shift the focus from social inequality, have muttered darkly about the role of BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter and Facebook – frightening new technologies that, like the pen and the human mouth, allow citizens to swap messages with one another.

As usual, sharp wit and crystal clear observation from Charlie. Particularly liked the quite above and his observation on social media and the politician's knee jerk reaction that (shock!) people used twitter to communicate the riots and thus let's ban everything.

A sad day.

Read all of the excellent article by Charlie Brooker.

Why Mobile Users Aren’t Checking In. Proof of check in fatigue.

Media_http6mshcdncomw_bvdrn

I got check in fatigue last year, not really a surprise when business uptake outside of the USA is low and benefits and incentives are nothing more than spamming facebook and twitter. Still room for something cool in this space though...

FOX able to laugh at themselves in excellent Social Media parody

For those that don't know USA national News channel Fox has overdosed this year on Social Media with tickers, tweets, FB posts and updates galore.

Only a matter of time before the parody started, and it's particularly good. The kinda really cool thing though is that this has been made BY a local fox station.

Always nice to see someone able to laugh at themselves, but I do hope those high above in Murdoch's empire have a sense of humour too.

I'm Stephen Scott, more news at 11. And now over to Tiffany for the weather...Tiffany?

BP. Bye bye brand. Oh, and Aquaman...

Media_http30mediatumb_ekqel

It's bad. One of the worst oil slicks and disasters ever. It's also very, very bad for BP's brand which is just getting the hammering (it deserves?) via this fake twitter account marked as BP Global PR. A read through the tweets highlighted:

"Here's the thing: we made $45 million A DAY in profits in 2009. This really isn't a big deal. #bpcares

Gotta love the web, it's a superhero in it's own way, and I for one am glad we have it.

'Stop the Puffery' or How not to 'puff up' your twitter background.

Media_httpmattobeecom_cxhuj

Nice post about the totally not accessible, and quite annoying habit to many of filing up every inch of the screen on twitter backgrounds with inaccessible links! All the examples here could really do with simplifying the message and cutting the crap out, or to steal Domino's marketing tagline; 'Stop The Puffery'.
